About Us

The Junior European Calcium Society board consists of young scientists (Ph.D. students, postdocs, and non-tenured junior group leaders) in the field of calcium research. The goal of the JECS board is to foster contacts and relationships by creating links between new and well-established scientists, as well as to support the next generation of researchers within the society.

If you are interested in becoming an active member of the ECS Junior Board and organising events and meetings, please feel free to contact us!

Spokespersons of the Junior Board

Björn-Philipp DIERCKS

Björn-Philipp DIERCKS

Junior Group Leader

University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany
Björn is interested in high-resolution calcium live-cell-imaging in T cells and the signalling processes of NAADP

Malene BROHUS

Malene BROHUS

Postdoctoral Researcher

Aalborg University, Denmark
Malene studies protein interactions in health and disease, with a particular focus on the role of the calcium sensor calmodulin in calcium-signaling and transduction.

Other Members of the Junior Board

Annalisa BELLANDI

Annalisa BELLANDI

PhD student

John Innes Centre, UK
Annalisa studies dynamics and cell-to-cell transmission of wound-induced calcium signals in plants.

Manon CALLENS

Manon CALLENS

PhD student

KU Leuven, Belgium

Manon is studying the effect of mutations in presenilin on intracellular calcium signaling, and how this contributes to early defects observed in Alzheimer’s disease.

Silke CHALMERS

Silke CHALMERS

PhD student

University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia
Silke is studying calcium signalling in metastatic breast cancer.

Bekhta FEDLAOUI

Bekhta FEDLAOUI

PhD student

University of Paris, France

Bakhta is interested in the impact of calcium modulation in a cellular and an animal model reproducing KCNJ5 mutations found in adenoma producing aldosterone in a context of primary aldosteronism.

Gaia Gherardi

Gaia Gherardi

University of Padova, Italy

Helene HALKJAER JENSEN

Helene HALKJAER JENSEN

Postdoctoral Researcher

Aalborg University, Denmark
Helene studies how human mutations in calmodulin affect calcium channels and calcium handling, and how this contributes to disease.

Adeline IVANOVA

Adeline IVANOVA

PhD student

The University of Cambridge, UK
Adelina’s work focuses on the licensing factors which enable inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors to release calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum in response to extracellular stimuli.

Qianru (Maggie) MU

Qianru (Maggie) MU

PhD student

University College London, UK

Qianru’s research focuses on Ca2+ signalling through two-pore channels on acidic organelles, and their functional significance in both health and disease.

Jussep SALGADO-ALMARIO

Jussep SALGADO-ALMARIO

Postdoctoral Researcher

University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain
Jussep studies the effects of mutations in proteins involved in the cardiac calcium dynamics of zebrafish.

Femke SPEELMAN-ROOMS

Femke SPEELMAN-ROOMS

PhD student

KU Leuven, Belgium

Femke studies the Ca2+-independent impact of the intracellular Ca2+ chelator BAPTA-AM on cell function and develops novel BAPTA-AM-based Ca2+ chelators.
